In western Africa , passport masks were carried around the neck by travelling men as a representation of their social status, profession, maturity and tribe. The colors of the masks had also their meaning. In a general rule, the more colorful was the mask the younger was the carrier. Colorful masks were associated with young apprentices. With maturity, social status and skills acquisition colors lessen. One color masks were mostly those of counselors or mentors.
